Some newbie like me could find this useful.
I apologize if this is something that everyone knows, and I am just wasting board space by posting it, but I ran into this problem in my game on Faerun, and got poor results from a few turns until Petar showed me this trick:
The Problem: You have many, many commanders in a castle. So many that they do not show up on the main screen, and you cannot select them. 'N' does not help, because they are busy Patrolloing or Researching, and are thus skipped. You want to have your whole force attack, not just the first twenty of them.
The Solution: Give moving orders to the ones that you can select normally. Press F1 to get to the province summary screen. Find the commanders that are listed as researching, patrolling, preaching, or hiding under the table so that they do not take part in the major attack. Switch them, still from the F1 screen, to defend. Close the screen, and use 'N' to select the now-available commanders, and tell them to get going.
Y.

I've never had this problem. Does your mouse have a scrolly wheel? The scrolly wheel lets you view the commanders which are hidden. I'm not sure how you do it without a scrolly wheel, though.

No, I just have a laptop, and the contraption that passes for a mouse is annoying enough without configuring it to act as a scroll wheel. The scroll wheel has not caught among my friends either, as in my experience, people who use CAD-CAM systems prefer straight-forward three button mouses.
But thanks for the tip. With the time I am spending playing Dominion II, I can certainly go and buy a mouse with a wheel.

+ and - keys should do the same, i.e. scroll commander list up and down.

Heh. Unlimited real estate on the board / forum, so you're certainly not wasting space. Slots on mosehansen, those are valuable real estate.
Not sure if I ever ran into this situation / problem - it's possible that I had over 20 researchers in one spot, and never realized they weren't all displayed / accessable. Good to know though, as this could also hide commanders with key magic items a person was searching for, amongst those researchers.

Yes, this is a problem if you play on a laptop without a mouse, as I am sometimes forced to do.
My HUGE wish still remains to be able to issue battle orders from the "view commander" screen as well as the other way around: switch from the "troop" screen directly to giving that commander field orders.

Re: Some newbie like me could find this useful.
Actually I had this problem before...
...though I did know about F1, I didnt know about the scroll-wheel which sounds pretty useful to me (since I got one on my laptop)!
Therefore thanks for starting this thread!
