i am not very skilled at pretender designing too until now
but some other tips :
first thing i always research is blood at least until lvl 3
then you can decide but blood 6 ( arch devils ) and blood 7 ( curse of blood ) are nice goals which i try to reach very quick too .
if you put 3 blood + 4 death on your pretender you can summon with him vampire counts (VC's)without empowering him.
the VC's are blood 3 / death 3 so if you research then construction 4 ( skull staff +1 death ) you can forge these for 1-2 of your VC's and they can summon additional VC's then and your pretender can do more important tasks .
you can use the VC's with their vampire hordes then from mid-endgame to defend your territory with positive dominion since they are immortal .
you should castle everything and the VC's have 3 strategic move so you can spread them at important points that every province you own can be reached by 1 VC squad
at the first turns you should do the following :
convert each turn your 5 fire gems to money .
for the first 30-40 turns at least you should try to build each turn 1 of the capitol only mages in your capitol .
with the alchemized fire gems you can build troops + a leader the first turns without problems
try to start blood hunting until turn 10 .
i myself do like this :
i take my poorest province with 5-10k population .
then i get in 2 bloodmages drop taxes to 0 and start hunting
normally the unrest stays low at 0-20 only very rarely it increases to unrest values of 50 or so . if this happens i pause one turn and let them forge something cheap e.g. SDR's .
but in general i can hunt 9 of 10 turns so and if i take a bit growth my population never decreases .
because if you patrol for each unrest point decreased 10 population are killed .
since if you bloodhunt heavy in a province you will decrease 50 or more unrest each turn each turn you kill 500+ population .
what's really nice with abysia is that the demonbred are F2B2 and fly . so if you start blood hunting early you can summon quite quick your first devil army and give it to a demonbread and fully use the strat move 3 .
in mid-lategame you should get some blood5+ F2 mages cause then infernal forces is just great
the other magic isn't so important for abysia all in all but you should search with augury in all your provinces for fire sites .
first if you are short in money you can alchemize them and second you have good fire mages
if you are lucky with independents and get earthmages you should search this way after earthsites too.

edit : question on the experts
during battles if a storm staff is used or storm as battle enchantment is there any way (counterspells/forged items ?) to counter this that your devils still can fly ?
or is the only "counter" to this to summon storm demons in addition to devils and use them against caelum / man / other strong air nations ?
