There's very little point researching other colonisation techs when they're _so_ easy to trade / steal / capture / conquer from your opponents. It does make a huge difference to your economy.

How about splitting the cost of each colonisation tech up into (say) 10 levels, with only the highest level giving you accss to the colony componenet? Then you'd have to trade/ capture and analyse 10 colony ships to get the component without research.

Might cause some game start problems though...

You should be able to set the starting tech level higher; I think the game takes care of only allowing one colonization tech per race. I may have to test this sometime...

Did you know that you can mod some of the files in the demo Version? The three or four best files are protected from editing, but you can still change "settings.txt" and maybe "systemtypes.txt" and some others.

Try my old (wow, time flies when you're playing an addictive game ) Demo Ablative Armor. You can't mod this file any further under the SE4 demo, though.

Modding rocks! There's nothing like the ability to mold a game into what you want it to be, and SE4 makes it sooo easy!
