SEIV and stars!
It's only a curiosity and I hope this will be
not too much off topics ... I look some of
the previews of the new stars! supernova and
there is really a lot of things that I have found here in SEIV ... and viceversa
I want to know, if possible, if there are people that are beta tester for both the games or people that are active member of
both the community ...
bye bye

Re: SEIV and stars!
Way back the two games I used to play constantly were Stars! and Space Empires 2.
Stars! is a lot more strategic than Space Empires (2, 3, & 4) and less battle-oriented, but it's way more realistic. It also doesn't have the customizability of anything Space Empires.
Supernova Genesis looks spectacular and promises to be even more customizable than SE4 with the game scripting language. With the exception of starship pictures and the fact that modding S!SG will be more complicated, I think it will give SE4 some good competition.
S!SG I think will remain more strategic (Stars! never had any planets) while SE4 is more tactical. My advice is to buy both games.

How so? Stars! has every race start with FTL drives from day 1. Shields are common to both.
The percentage of way-out-there components is pretty much the same for both games as I remember it, SE4 just has way more of everything.

Yes. S!SG looks very good and I will buy it and probably MOO3 as well. SE4 has the huge advantage that you can buy it now. Perhaps we will be comparing SE5 to S!SG?
Neither game can be really real "realistic" as it's all science fiction. My measure of these sorts of games is how coherent, consistant and credible the various game elements are within the game's universe, and how it hangs together as a fun game.

Re: SEIV and stars!
I also played stars! before I discovered space empires, and let me just say, I hated it!
Defending systems was pointless, as systems were pretty much useless. You didn't need to provide support for your ships so you could have an almost infinite armada. Population grew out of control. Minefields covered huge portions of the galaxy.
What really killed the game was there was almost no strategy involved.
