Need help on SEIV GOLD
I do not have SEIV Gold - I'd like to buy it but I have a problem concerning which Shrapnel Customer Service has declared that they cannot help me.
The size of the patch files necessary to upgrade Gold and the TDM Modpack make both too large for me to download. Why that is so is not really the issue here, but I am more or less limited in download to floppy sized files (1.44 meg). I do not think that unpatched Gold is worth my limited funds to me, as one fix that I feel necessary is the one that made the AIs realize that they have the bonus when they plan. Another critical one is the warp point sequence fix over the original game that made the lower number player always go first.
So, my Q to Shrapnel was would they sell me a disk (in addition to the Gold disk) that would let me extract the Gold and TDM Modpack patches. I was told they c/would not do that. Shrapnel would happily sell me Gold, has put the patch on their website, but claimed that they had no knowledge of anything called a TDM Modpack. Then Customer service went on to add:
"Our distribution methods for patches have nothing to do with our production capabilities. While we appreciate your offer to pay for the service, we are bound by contractual agreements with the creators of the patches as to how we may distribute the files. Again, I'm confused by your comment concerning the TDM Modpack."
Is there a lawyer in the House, er, on the Board? Isn't it legal for anyone here to take those patch files freely available on the site, burn them onto a CD, and mail them to an address I'd supply for a guy like me who cannot download them? I'd recompense, gladly.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
I am almost certain that TDM comes on the gold CD... so much for Shrapnel product knowledge.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
Shrapnels customer service is outstanding. The problem is they have no control over the file sizes for the mods or the patches. Additionally, they may or may not have direct knowledge of each products available fan made mods.
If you need the patch and TDM mod broken down into smaller peaces, then all you have to do is ask. You will most likely need to get winRar as that is the best program for doing this kind of thing.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
I am sure you could find someone to 'burn' the files for you, but the law is clear, unless you have authorization to do so by the creator of the program, in this case Malfador, it is illegal. (IIRC)
Just email malfador and ask them to send you the patch on disk. Who knows, they just might.
As for the TDM, the latest Version is 340, and I have broken it up into 1.44 size files for you to download. As with the patch for SE IV. Good luck.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
Burning them to disk is 100% legal. Mailing such a disk to someone is most likely 100% legal, as long as you are not getting any compensation... The files are provided for free to the general public, after all. What is illegal is selling them when you have no right to be selling them...

Well now that the problem has a solution, are you going to buy the game?
Most mod hosts, if asked, would probibly be willing to break their mods down for you, but you have to specifically ask them to do it, as it is kind of a pain to do.
And again, I think shrapnel customer service is the best. Why you ask, well because they have been there for me every time I have needed help. However these fine people cannot be expected to know every detail for the 20 or so games they sell. That is where we, the game fans, come into play.
My server space is limited, but I would be willing to help any who ask. So if you need mods broken down into floppy size bits, just ask. If I cannot help, I am hopeful that someone else will.
Now go order yourself a great game and come join us at PBW for addictive game play.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
I really appreciate all the efforts to break down the patches into floppy sizes.
How do I re-merge them? I mean, if they were on a CD in one piece, I would just double click on the exe file and it would do the rest, "installshield" and all. How does it work with it broken into pieces? I've not had to do that before.
Hey, I've got gray hair! My PC-savvy son who I've tasked to do this stuff before is in Iraq and so not available.
As you can see from my date, I've been w/SEIV since just about the very beginning, as I lurked for some while before I registered into the Board. The web game stuff is another area I have avoided, due to my limitations.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
Get WinRar. Install it. Then, you can just open up any of the partial archive files, and it will reconstruct the archive and let you extract it as normal. Assuming you have all parts in the same folder, of course.

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
I looked at that site. I guess you mean that I should download WinRAR 3.30 onto a floppy then load it on the game pc. Then, assuming I have bought and installed SEIV Gold, then eventually downloaded onto 9 separate floppies, then copied them all into some one folder on that game pc, that I would double click on the first SEIV Patch (of 2) file using WinRAR? Then what? Does it do something?
If it managed to patch SEIV, would I then double-click on just the first of the 7 TDM files? Would it do the rest?

Re: Need help on SEIV GOLD
It opens the archive files, and treats them like a single archive file. You can then extract the files as if it were a normal single file archive.
Yes, you only need to click on one of the TDM multi-part archive files. All must be present, but only one needs to be accessed.
