Actually you should yank the IE components using something like 98Lite, otherwise the DLLs with security holes and flaws can still be called by _other_ programs, including malcode.
It does complicate life a little - Adobe's PDF reader requires IE on Windows, and the only PDF viewer I found isn't nearly as good as Acrobat. Some other programs won't work without it as well: some CD ripping/burning software, some of Real's offerings, etc.
