Default Maximum Ships Limit

I have two questions about the Maximum Ships Limit that is set at the beginning of the game.

1. Do bases count against this total? I noticed that the score screen keeps track of ships and bases separately. But does the Maximum Ship Limit differentiate between ships and bases?

2. Do mothballed ships count against this total? I remember reading somewhere or figuring out at one time that mothballed ships weren’t counted in the ships figure that is part of the score screen.

Thanks!

I believe the answer to both are yes, however I could be extremely wrong.

I believe bases count; it would make sense if nothing else, as otherwise you could have two thousand bases to fight against two hundred ships. Don't quote me on that though, since I scrapped all my bases in a 200-ships game.

Mothballed ships/bases do not count against the ship limit (or ships being built for this matter). And they aren't counted in the score indeed, so you never know if your foe has mothballed ships, and how many of them.

Bases count against the max.
Mothballed ships do not count.

Mothballed ships do count against your maximum ships limit.

Mothballing a ship will remove it from the score computation for score points, but they are still in the "Total number of ships" number that is on the ship info screen. And your allies can see from the score screen can see the total of how many ships you have, but they have no way of knowing how many or if any are motballed unless they use ships with scanners. Mothballing a ship will not allow you to build another ship. You will have to scrap it to do that.

The only way to get past your maximum ships limit is to get ships from another empire, either through intel, capture, gifts or trading.

A quick test has confirmed your post Geo, and destroyed my own assumption. Hmm, it looks like I made a mistake with my maths in that game then, since I could have sworn I was above the ship limit, mothballed ships included. It was obviously not the case in light of this test. Back to Algebra 101 for me!

Thanks for having made that matter clear. One less thing to worry about at least. (No hidden, mothballed fleet waiting to jump on me)

I am dredging up this old thread and quoting myself here because I think I have realized I was not 100% correct with this statement.

Mothballed ships do count against your total ship limit, that is correct. But I think now that your allies cannot see your total # of ships in the score display. They only see the ships that count as far as score computation goes, so they don't see your total number of ships, only the ships that are not mothballed. So you could have say 500 mothballed ships, and 50 that aren't motballed, and when your ally looks at your score he'll only see 50 ships for your empire.

If he's flying around in your space though he'll see your mothballed ships sitting there. If you have a bunch more than are showing up on your score display he could do a count and figure out they are mothballed. And he could always peek at them with scanners and see they are mothballed.

It's possible to exceed the limit by capturing, but not by mothballing.

So, do ships captured still count against the original builder's total?

No, they count in the total for the empire that captures them. Say you have a 200 ship limit and you build 200 ships. If you want to build another ship you will have to scrap one. But you can capture 10 ships from another empire and your total will now be 210, and your enemies total will be reduced. But now if you want to build another ship you'll have to scrap 11 (just 11 ships, doesn't have to be the ones you captured) to get down below the 200 ship limit. If you are a race that captures a lot, you could get way over your limit. But it will make it very difficult if you need to build anything new.
