There's a book by Terry Pratchett "Only You Can Save Mankind" in which the aliens of a Space Invaders type game complains to a kid that he's killing them. He replies that whenever he starts a new game, there are more alien ships, and the aliens reply that they're always new ships piloted by different individuals.

Ah, but in SEIV the AI's don't die at all - all that happens is their empires get crushed. They loose, they don't die.
