I cannot promise you safety, but I can promise that the protection so far extends to the King and his direct heirs, and perhaps those who would do you harm would make a distinction between first in line and Last in line."

Flavius grew serious.

"I cannot stop you if you desire to slay me. Indeed, I have already given up my weapon. But slay me, and you break ages old dipomatic protocol. If I do not return, men will be sent to find my fate. I know that my warning of danger has been ambigious, but it is only out of concern for your royal highness. If you wish, I can tell you now and you may take your chances. That is the most I can offer without endangering your life. And before you misintepret my remarks, the danger does not come from Septimus or his allies, but his opponents."

"Surround me with a hundred guards if you wish, have a mage examine me for evil intent, but I beg you to let me speak with your father Prince."
