I read it way back in High School (when it was actually 1984 on the Calendar...) but I don't remember if it was required or not. Either way it was interesting, in a slightly depressing way. I always liked that quote, for some reason.

Re: OT: Bill gates, circa 1984
We were all required to read 1984 in my high school. That was one of the more interesting books we read.
Some of the other books we studied were:
The Crysalids
MacBeth
Of Mice and Men
Death of a Salesman
Lord of the Flies

Re: OT: Bill gates, circa 1984
The only one I remember is To Kill A Mockingbird. I guess the others were either so bad I supressed the memory or so boring I forgot them. TKAM was...um...Not my area of interest.
And if we're talking books, don't miss Katherine Kerr's Deverry series. I've seen author's try to be epic; to come up with a story that rivals Tolkein. Quite seriously, this one does.

Re: OT: Bill gates, circa 1984
I had to read "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant". I sort of skimmed though it, looking at all the words as quick as possible but not registering it. I thought I had got the whole book till the teacher asked me about the flashbacks and time changes.

LMAO. Gates looks like he's stoned, if you ak me. At least he didn't start peeling his clothes off or anything. Hey man, who's got the Cheetos?
I remember a lot of stuff we read back in the dark ages. Along with the usual things kids read at that time was "The Fellowship of the Ring." I finished the trilogy sometime afterward. I had to. In fact, it's amazing the number of things I read that have since been made into movies, especially the comic books.

Ok I get it now. It was his um, boyish pose for the local 1984 lover boy clubs.
No offense of course intended for those who might take offense.

Re: OT: Bill gates, circa 1984
Must we bring politics into this??
Kamog, I too had to read the Chrysalids in school, and in my opinion, it was one of the best books that we had to read. We've also had to read:
-The Chrysalids
-Deathwatch
-MacBeth
-Romeo & Juliet
-King Lear
-Lord of the Flies
-Death of a Salesman (absolutely the stupidest play ever)
-The Grapes of Wrath
-and some more books I can't remember right now.

Re: OT: Bill gates, circa 1984
Dam, sounds like you all got the good books.
At My School in the Uk we had to read:
Romeo and Julliet
Henry V
A Doll’s House
A Taste of Honey
Lamb to the Slaughter
And Too Many Sherlock Holmes stories to remember.
Very few of them are any good IMHO Comapred to what I read normally in my own time. (granted most of it is Science Fiction )

Wow, really? I always thought it was pretty brilliant. I mean, nowadays, it might be a bit dated, but I thought it was extremely well done. I think if you see the play, rather than just read the book, it has a lot more punch.
