Description:
The Carrier Battles mod radically alters the combat system, mainly by expanding the role of fighters while also introducing sensible limitations. Fighters are the main platform from which to launch strong missile assaults, provide point defense coverage, and to kill enemy fighter groups. Bombers, interceptors and superiority fighters can all be designed from the same hulls, with tradeoffs based on the design, rather than forced by the hull.
Although fighters are quite fast in combat, and the engines allow for speed/size tradeoffs, they have extremely limited non-combat movement capabilities, which is where the carriers come in. Although there are small support ship hulls available, any major combat will involve mostly carriers, and ungodly numbers of the powerful fighters.
There is a vastly expanded missile selection to compliment the fighters as well. Planetary bombardment missiles, capital ship missiles with the punch to penetrate shields, anti-fighter missiles to help tip the balance in a furball, and even anti-missile missiles for basic point defense capability.
