Default OT: Vehicle registration and anti-theft.

One of the things I've heard is a way criminals can use your vehicles registration number (The one the company gives it) to make a set of keys for it. I'm not going to post how, but I will say it sounds entirely possible to me and that you should cover any such number up; my dad has a slip of paper over his.

I remember watching a show on the History channel that was talking about a guy operating in Toronto, where he was stealing new and expensive cars and replacing them with the ID numbers from old wrecked cars that were in the junk yard. This way, when the cops checked the number for that of a stolen car, they were different. Also, this guy went so far as to change all of the manufacturing numbers that are on other parts of the car. Alas, he was caught and jailed along with his wife. (They ran an auto repair shop.)

I am lucky that I have never had to face such problems.

I have a funny story to tell you.

(removed by me)

Tell me this isn't a funny story.

(EDIT: I advised that this might be a bit to hard core so I went ahead and deleted it.)

No, it's not funny. But at least maybe those cops will think twice the next time instead of assuming.

They did there jobs. If they had just asked me to explain it then all would have been good. But now they get to sit around bragging about how they foiled my plan to become an mega evil empire of one.

All I can say is..WOW!
That is a very interesting story.
You know what they say 'That which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.' well, maybe not stronger but I'm sure you gained some experience from this event.
You'd think for something small, cops would use 'ask questions first, then shoot later'.

Try watching cops and ask yourself if you could deal with that day in and day out.

I couldn't.

Me neither. But here's the thing: I respect the job, its sacrifices, and its difficulties. But rarely have I ever come away from any meeting with a police officer with respect for the cop. (Keep in mind that I live in Los Angeles.)

I am so clean I squeak. Never any drugs, don't abuse alchohol, not a single moving violation ever. My problem is I have really long hair. Cops stop me at the airport, at traffic roadblocks for construction, late at night coming home from a gig... whatever. And why?

Because 95% of the police force is a bunch of jaded, goose-stepping profilers. I remember one highway patrolman who pulled me over cuz he thought I wasn't wearing my seatbelt (I was) and he was the nicest guy; a genuine human who looked in the back of my truck, asked me what I did for a living, chatted with me about it for awhile and wished me a happy, safe day. I thought "Wow. That was cool. Maybe I'm wrong." Then a couple weeks later, some arrogant fool with a flat-top pulls me over and asks if I've been drinking today. My kid's in the car with me on the way home from guitar lessons. So I stand in front of the car with my hands on the hood while one guy frisks me and another digs through my stuff in between my seats. Looking for what? My obvious pot-stash because I have long hair? "Dad, why was that guy so mean to you?" "I don't have an answer for that, Derek, maybe he thought I was doing something wrong."

I know not all cops are pr##ks, but if you don't look like they think you should look, their pitiful view of humanity makes them immediately your superior and you're in the wrong until you prove otherwise.

My $0.02
