Re: cant play s.e iv anymore
Yeah, I can't wait for SE5 to come out, too. I'm certain that I won't play SE4 very much after getting SE5, just like I don't play SE3 anymore... it's just not the same once something new and better is available.

Re: cant play s.e iv anymore
I'll continue playing SE4 for as long as the PVK Proportions Game 1 on PBW continues to run. Or until I get wiped out of the game, one or the other.
There's a few decades left in that game alone, I think.

Re: cant play s.e iv anymore
I wonder what the oldest and the longest running games on PBW are.

Well, that one I just mentioned is at least 3 or 4 years old...
And I've been in it since turn 1!

Re: cant play s.e iv anymore
How can a game run that long without coming to some type of conclusion? Is this a one turn per week type of game, or have the players sorta agreed to "play nice" with eachother? In the games I've been in, once a guy gets pretty large, the game sorta goes to another phase where it resolves itself: either the big guy is killed by the smaller guys uniting, resulting in the smaller ones dividing up the spoils (and usually giving them the spur to go for broke themselves) or the big guy gets so powerful that nobody can stop em. How is it that a PBW game has gone on for so long?

Re: cant play s.e iv anymore
on average, I'd say about 2 turns/week.
The main factor in the game's slow pace though is that it's running on an older version of Proportions. If you're not familiar with Proportions, it slows play down a LOT (wonderful!), and the mod was all pretty new when we first started the game, so we were all playing cautiously as well.

Re: cant play s.e iv anymore
The PVK Proportions game #1 just past the 3 year aniversary a few days ago, it started on March 29, 2002. At turn 261 that's about 1.6 turns a week on average. I was in the game at the start but dropped out over two year ago.
We have one game still running that's older. The Borg Open challange game, started in July 2001. That one is only up to turn 167 so they don't do turns as often apparently. It's probably about to wrap up since there are only two players left.
We have three games with more turns then the Proportions game. Currently the leader in that department is TDM Round 2. This game is on turn 361. It's only a two player game, which tend to go faster. They started in June of 2004 so they have done better than a turn a day for almost a year now.
We don't keep stats on games that are finished and have been deleted so I can't tell you what the most turns in a game ever is, but I'm pretty sure the oldest game ever is the BOC game. It's almost as old as PBW.

Dedicated hard core players and the Propotions Mod = LONG GAME. Normal good games go at least a year. Really good games go between a year and two years. And superb games go longer than two years. Excellent games go longer than three years.
I have yet to play a good game that has NOT gone a year. Those game are the best... Although I just surrendered in QOC game after a year.... I could have kept going but I was in last place being so far behind the second to last player by twice his score that to continue, especially with the limited time I have, was the better thing to do.
When you get into a good game, it just feels good to play. Especially when you start to click with your allies and such. The first 12hr onslought game was one such game, and so was the SSFF II game with CNC, Gandolph, Tnarg, and so on.
