I thought in Wesnoth you got 1 experience point for every time you attack or were attacked.

Hehe, a Wesnoth thread !
Sure the xp system is gamey, but in the case of Wesnoth it's intentional, you have to manage levelling in order to get a strong army.
hat's why the first scenarios are quite easy if you just try to complete the victory conditions... They are designed to help you get rather easy xp's , in order to win the following, much harder levels ! I've mostly played in 0.8.8, since they have nerfed some levels, but yet the reasoning applies.

I'm not sure but I believe Wesnoth gives a unit experience for each blow it attempts. I agree the emphasis on landing the final blow is too high, but I think that mitigates it somewhat. It would also seem to me that an XP award for defending against a blow would be a nice concept. You practice offensive, you get better; you practice defense, you get better. Who lands the last blow should be moot.

It does. 1 XP for a level 1 unit, 2 XP for a level 2, etc. The kill bonus is similar.

Which means you can have the utterly bizzare scenerio where a more-advanced unit makes the scenerio EASIER for the player.
