Nvidia has 256 MB cards as well. The extra ram definitely makes a big difference.
ATI cards are usually cheaper for the exact same overall performance. Check out some benchmarks on sites such as anandtech.com. You will see that there is practically no difference between the best ATI cards and best Nvidia cards. |

I like the ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder line of cards. That way I can use my computer as a TV, and still be able to handle any current game on medium to high settings.
Also, I never buy the top of the line graphics card, since the next step down is plenty powerful at half the price.

I've never had a NVidia card, always gone ATI and never had any complaints.

I'd say that the drivers are more important than the actual card. Sometimes I cannot believe the difference they make, of course other times they make bugger all difference. But the point is still valid(ish)
To the question, NVidias always worked well for me and all else being equal I'd get them again. Even all else being slightly less than equal in fact.
