Re: Damned artificial idiot!
"Don't get hurt" means "Get as far away from the enemy as possible, as quickly as possible". It will fire on a ship if the ships gets in range. But when one side is jukeing in and out of firing range, and the other side is climbing the corner like a lobster trying to get out of an aquarium, well, it's easy to see which side is going to land the most shots.

Re: Damned artificial idiot!
I suggsted this a whil back, can't remmeber if it was feasible or not...
Could you mod the components so that hulls had a weapon ability, huge range (20 squares or something like that), 1 damage at all ranges. Then, instead of giving the "don't get hurt" order to unarmed ships, tell them "max weapons range". Then they will stay at the maximum range of their hull weapon instead of running for the corners. Might be more effctive.
WOuld this work?

I learned this one the hard way: If you told them to attack the planet and they got beat up doing it but they are still there, they still have the order to attack in their command queue. When you tell them to leave, they think they have to attack the planet first. You have to clear their existing commands before you tell them to leave.
And no, I didn't learn this by watching a lone carrier that had lost all of its fighters, repeatedly attack a planet, then sit in the corner since it couldn't actually do anything.

Re: Damned artificial idiot!
Hmm, I rather like an AI that does what I tell it to, and continues to try until I cancel the order. At least one other game comes to mind where the AI is quite happy to disregard player orders and do what it thinks is best, leaving the player to cry, "No, you idiot, don't turn away! Follow my order! Don't you remember that there's an enemy panz-- I mean enemy 'starship' over there?!"

Re: Damned artificial idiot!
Not quite... the ships were there originally to do a recon on the planet with a "don't get hurt" order, and you guys already know what happened from my first post in this thread (the ships ran to different corners, a few got killed). The next turn I changed the order to "maximum range" and tried to get them out, but the AI obviously thought it could have a go at the planet and win... how dumb!

Re: Damned artificial idiot!
Well actually, I think I DID give them an attack order to get them in in the first place... still, the AI's fault!!
