In the beginning of the game buy hoplites... they're good for the price. Focus on research and getting some death summons. If you have good gold income get the big spider hunters. For bottle neck areas I recommend having 4 assassins to take out any approaching armies. Also summon vine ogres for whatever mages can reach 3 nature via items.
