1 - put lots of ships in orbit (about 7-10 should do it)
2 - build troops (light troops with nothing but a cockpit) when the planet is getting angry, or land troops after they are rioting.
3 - some people say build an urban pac center, or temporal vacation service, or religious happyness thingy, but they usually dont help after the riots have already started.

I have alot of research points, 2x as many as the next AI. Am I foolish to have trade & research treaties?
depends on if you think you are getting more out of it than them. if you honestly dont need the research points, then downgrade the treaties. keep in mind tho, that if you have research treaties with many AIs, the cumulative result is fairly respectable and may be part of what is boosting your research score that high. certainly drop the treaties after you have achived what you consider to be 'key technologies' so you can kick the ladder down behind you, if you will pardon the expression.

Re: Game 3 Questions
Also you might want to keep research treaties with smaller empires as long as they are helping you fight your common enemies that are stronger than they are. They can't help you if they have wimpy weapons.

Re: Game 3 Questions
Here is my little opinion...
1.) To keep the AI from colonizing, station ships at the warp points. Blow the suckers up before they get in the door. If they sneak by, have a detachment ready to take out the colony before they take hold. I reccommend building colony ships ASAP and a few escorts.
2.) Dunno, I typically park-n-forget my sentry ships.
3.) Keep an eye on traffic, take an escort and park it in orbit of something in the system. If a ship isn't moving, then it isn't using supplies. Make sure supplies do not drop below 50%.
4.) Typical! It is a constant problem! Research biological weapons FAST and deploy them against the AI just as fast. Hit thier homeworld and any colonies of the same atmosphere witin the first 25 turns. The rest of the is clean up.

happyness from troops builds up over time. after a couple turns they should stop. 60 is a pretty decent number, i landed about 150 troops once and the happyness level went from angry straight to jubilant. less troops just take more time, and if they have been rioting for a long time, i think it might take longer to undo.

Re: Game 3 Questions
There is a maximum change per turn limit, you know. It's set in the happiness.txt file and I think it's 20 percent for all types. If they had been rioting for a long time they might be well over 100 percent 'unhappiness' and it would take several turns to neutralize this. I'm not sure how high it can go, or now it decides that rioting has progressed far enough to cause a full rebellion.
BTW, one way to make the 'bloodthirsty' happines type useable is to make troops more effective at increasing happiness. Rationale would be that troops inspire 'patriotic' feelings. Then, the happiness hit from treaties other than war can be controlled by having at least a few troops on all your planets.
