According to Sunraybe's 'What is not in the spell manual' at www.freewebs.com/dominions2, 'defense' is the same as 'power', which gives more hitpoints, strength, attack and defense to the caster.

The spelling used in the game is "defence," the British spelling.

Wow, I had never even noticed there was a difference. And you are right, the game uses 'defence' with c, and that's the one SunrayBe listed.
