From one Baron to another, I think your problem is most likely related to the international non-US English character set. Try re-installing a previous patch or from scratch to get the original fonts. Then, save them to a ZIP file before installing the 1.49 patch. After you have 1.49 installed, unzip the old fonts (save the new ones if you want so you don't have to install a patch just to get them...
) If it works with the old fonts, it's some incompatibility between your system and the fonts. Probably some quirk of the non-US English character set. If it still doesn't work with the old fonts that must genuinely be something in the program, though it might well be the non-US English character set in that case, too.
