Age of Wonders had a geyser spell which I liked, but it just lifted the enemy up and then dropped it, in one turn.

Yup, unit would get high up on geyser and then the geyser would stop. The unit would spin down and make a big splat.

Sorry for cynism, but it's probably just area of effect damage spell with MR check.
