You have up to nine planets, and you're only allowed to build some facilities, and must make fleet to survive
Some features I bring from www.ogame.com are income scale from buildings, fleet-only ship management, wrackage gathering ...
features from Space Empire are: the races, the form of the tech tree, ship customizing, trade in alliance ...
I played ogame for a year with some friends, but it turns crazy: the best stay the best, and the other ones, stayed as farm for them

I've played ogame year ago, and after three-four months I was totally bored. I was top1 in fleet and top5 in points. And I realized that to be the best you don't need to think just play a lot, almost 24h/7days, and if you don't make mistake you are invincible. SpeedStim ruined this game because you can know the result of fight before the fight, thus there is no risk, no trill, just clicking 24h/7days to save resources and fleet. If you don't want to fight you can always escape, (except you have enemy moon near and you make mistake).
Consider to look at
www.x-wars.com (or
www.x-wars.fr if you are French). It's much more advanced, I've spent playing it 8 months. Trading and cooperating with alliance is really improved, and you can customize your ships, almost like in SE (but only 3 hull sizes + rockets and probes and small amount of components). Lots of fun features, like camuflage (cloak), carriers, tactical warheads (like anty-ship drones). But still it sucks, because it's real-time and to be unbeatable you need to play almost 24h/7days.
Make your game turn-based. In SE4 you can doing (thinking about) your turns 3 days, and your opponent only 5-15 minutes, and you can be beaten. Winners should be those who have got better ideas, and strategy, not those who can waist more time.
That's the reason that I'm not longer playing ogame or x-wars.
