I think Conquest of Elysium 1 was a pet project that didn't get to a point worth releasing, so they restarted it as Conquest of Elysium 2. A bit like with Slaves to Amok 1 and 2; the first had mediocre small 3d graphics and was at a point where you could control one "adventurer", do basic spells, kill basic enemies, and the world was yet to be done... That project was discarded and we all (should) know the second game: Dwarf Fortress!
That's rather encouraging thought, don't you think? conquest of Elysium 2 was Illwinter's Dwarf Fortress. Happy birthday, Prophets of the Forgotten Dreams!
