If you pay for something free with something free then its still free. zero plus zero equals zero.
My mom taught me to "pay" for free things with a smile, or a thankyou. In general with a kind word. It was rude not to. I figure it should be the same on internet. Particularly if people are going to complain when the free things stop coming.
