Note that the ally switch is not an all-or-nothing switch. Its "ally A B" nations. You can create multiple alliances within a game.

I have a Dom2 scenario where I allied Rlyeh Atlantis and Ermor against everyone else.

I gave them each "sibling" pretenders and boosted them with extra armies and castles.
