I once had a pretty cool picture of a dragon, but using it as wallpaper seemed to make my computer less stable.

That's quite common. If you're going to use a backdrop picture of something heavy, like a dragon, it's always a good idea to make sure the heavy item is central on the screen. If it is to one side, you should at least make sure there is something of approximately equal weight on the other side of the picture to balance it out.

That should fix most instability problems
