Not sure if it's a bug, me doing something completely retarded, or something more nefarious, but somehow on both my major battles this turn my large groups of mages got placed in front of my infantry. What a thoroughly depressing turn.

Nefarious? You have a password set, I assume?
If you put a commander inside the square of a squad, behavior can be erratic. Also, they are relative positions.... it can do strange things.

Just at a guess, it looks like they got reset to the "default" center position that units are in if you don't move them. I took the turn a couple days ago, so I wouldn't swear on a bible, but I'm pretty sure they were all placed near the back row, inside a large block of chaff (behind heavy infantry). Their actual placement ended up being a good 10 feet in front of any blockers.
Oh well, pretty terrible turn but I'm not quite throwing in the towel yet.
