Generic Vehicle Slot Layouts

I was think this same thing a couple of hours after my post thinking about it. Basically use the outer slots as leaky armor/shielding, and then have the rest of the ship components as inner slots... How do you think this would work with the directional damage? Would I be able to achieve the affect of having say basically a directional shield/armor?
