Re: OT - Forum Decorum
Praetor... The officers from the Roman Praetorian Guard. I thought it sounded cool, and figured anything along the lines of "Emperor" would already be taken, or at least passé.
BTW, I lived in England for three years, and have heard just about every good-natured and not so good-natured argument about why Americans or Britons are superior. I finally came to the conclusion: why argue about it? When the French are so much more annoying than anyone?
Also, in case anyone had doubts as to whether I'm total geek, that quote about England and America being divided by a common language is from Oscar Wilde.

Re: OT - Forum Decorum
I needed to create a login name, so I pondered long and hard to find a name that:
a) looked/sounded neat
b) could not be taken too seriously.
After a week, this was the best I could come up with.

Re: OT - Forum Decorum
Praetor, I like the French for all their faults, Canadians and Australians are good people too!!
BTW, Praetors were not officers in the Praetorian guard, the guard was formed originally to guard praeteors. The title originally meant a consul, and later a judicial magistrate. In 242 B.C. two praetors were appointed, the urban praetor (praetor urbanus), deciding cases to which citizens were parties, and the peregrine praetor (praetor peregrinus) deciding cases between foreigners. The urban praetor exercised the functions of the consuls in their absence and of the peregrine praetor when he was holding a military command. As I recall, two additional praetors were appointed to administer Sicily and Sardinia, and two more to administer Spain. A principal duty of praetors was the production of the public games. Under the empire, the functions of the praetor were gradually taken over by the other magistrates and title was more an honorific.
I guess you want to be more a Praetorian ie a elite guardsman of the late empire (and generally a german mercenary) rather than a Praetor (a magistrate and game producer) - maybe not
PS spot who did classical civilizations at uni

Re: OT - Forum Decorum
is it me or has this forum been really busy lately.
There has to be about 60 threads running right now. Shouldn't we be slowing down before gold??
I am coming here 3 times a day now to keep up.
Ouch.
Not complaining.
P.s. Canadians are quite polite.
If you hit there parked car in their driveway the first things out of their mouth will be 'Sorry about putting the car in driveway'
