Isn't it possible to just participate as "observer": it would be helpful for a beginner like me...Maybe it is a silly question but as I said I'm almost brand new.

Hopefully, another game will be starting in a week or two. Until then get a load of practice in SP play, MP play is tough and ruthless but fun.
Make sure you try to check the multiplayer thread a few times a day. Games fill up within 24hrs generally.
