Since the game won't let you cross-attach units (except in the editor) you get to deal with command/control problems or wind up deploying the Weapons Platoon en-mass.
Yes you can! In acampain, you can use the attach to new leader command if I'm not wrong.

You can cross attach formations not individual units so if you have a weapons platoon you can only re-attach the whole formation to another leader. You cannot divide up the mortars to one leader, the MG's to another and attach the ATGM's to a third formation

Should we be making a bit different weapons platoons, because usually the tactical situation needs for different types of heavy weapons for different platoons / companies. Say, you need the hvy platoons ATGMs under a different rifle platoons, than the machine guns. C&C becomes even harder, if those platoons have also mortars, Inf-SAM etc.

So could those weapons platoons be cut into separate units, like 1 MG and 1 ATGM, or 2 ATGM and 2MG, and a different mortar/SAM/AT section. I know that you can purchase these units separately (I always do that), but since there are weapons platoons, why couldn´t they be made to operate as such, reinforcing where needed? Now to me they seem useless to purchase.

Since it started from Andy Johnson's OoB I think worth to point out this work about NATO Countries OoB 1989 with many improvements and additions since the original document by A.J.
