Now that PBW is back Online and running, I'm happy to announce a new tournament: The First Universe Cup. Of course, there's no real Cup, and control of the universe is not transferred to the winner, but let's just pretend, shall we?
This tournament has several important features. I know some of these features will deter some players, but the object was to create a tournament structure that removed the element of chance from SE4.
------------
1. All games will be played 1 on 1, and all games will be played on the same map. This map has been devised to be as fair as possible, up to the point of being rotationally symmetrical.
The map will be available for review by all players before the start of the tournament. While this might eliminate exploration of the galaxy for the purposes of finding new planets, it does not eliminate exploration to find out what your adversary is up to.
2. In order to make the map small enough to play a two-player game on, all of the planets are of two types: Rock/Oxygen, or Ice/Hydrogen. Obviously, one player takes one, one takes the other for each game.
3. There will be two rounds of play. The first round will be a pooled round-robin. The contestants will be divided into several pools (number to depend on the number of entrants), and within each pool, each contestant will play every other pool member.
So, with 24 entrants, there would be four pools of six players each. In the first round, each player would play five games simultaneously, one against each other contestant in his pool.
The top N players from each pool plus M wild-cards based on record within the pool will advance to the second round, which will be a standard double elimination tournament. N and M will vary depending on the total number of players, but will likely add up to 8 for <32 entrants, or 16 for >32 entrants. (N.B.: M may be equal to 0).
4. The round robin will be played with Version 1.49. The second round MAY be played using Gold, depending on a vote of the players who advance.
------------
All this may be slightly confusing, but because all games will be played 1 on 1, the tournament should move rather quickly--especially in the round robin, in which many games will be played simultaneously. (The round robin will also be a unique test of PBW, as, with the maximum of 64 players, there will be a total of 224 games simultaneously being played).
If you're interested, please either:
1. REPLY to this thread;
2. SEND EMAIL to

I hope you'll be interested in playing what is, I think, the largest SE4 tournament to be put on yet. Happy playing!

(Quick note: This tourney is not sponsored by PBW, Malfador, or Shrapnel. It's just for fun, and huge bragging rights.)
