Communions with banefire is so much fun. Banefire has a long range, wide area, awesome damage. Add some communion shadow blasting. Summon up some skeleton archers and add some more banefire pain. Make sure to have plenty of undead chaff in from of the skeleton archers to soak the priest banishings. Unload with a round of horror markings and then summon some Lamshanka's. Use plenty of Banes equiped for linebacking in front of your communion armies.
I agree about the banes, (by which I assume you mean wights, the troop version. Banes are commanders, and although they make decent thugs, you proably wont be massing them) although they're hard to mass, but dispute several of your other points:
Banefire is not avialable to ME ermorian national mages, as it needs F1. Banefire archers, likewise, although you don't need amny casters, so a god and some empowerment would probably work. I'm not sure its cost effective, but they are pretty cool anyway.
Both of those are probably decent options for early ermor, however.

As for Lammashtas, I've found them to be pretty unreliable except with mages ordered to cast and the retreat, in which case you don't get the province. Otherwise , in my experiance, one of several things occurs: the Lammashtas kill reverything, frindlies included, The Lammashtas die horribly to a huge enemy army/battle magic/something lethal, or the lammashtas massacre the enemy, only to be brutally murdered by your forces, in which case your army was very likely strong enough to defeat the opposition without recourse to such a dangerous spell.
On the other hand, I'm not

Lammashatas are something I've only used as a harrassment spell- leaving a few mages to summon and retreat, and an unhappy enemy army to fight 8 or so lammshatas at once. Trade a province for an army.

My post was strictly EA Ermor.
EA Ermor has Fire, Death and Astral on their mages.

Lammashatas will goto horror marked troops first. That is why you lead off with horror mark with some of your mages. We are talking mid-late game here so you are hopefully horror marking the enemy thugs. Send in the Lammshatas before the enemy can buff up. You usually need 1 round for the enemy armies to start coming in range, even for banefire. So a script of Communion master/ Summon Lammshatas/Banefire/banefire/banefire.

This is more of a communion question, but what sort of commanders do you use for communion slaves?

Thanks for the advice guys. Going for just completely massed Bane-stuff should work very well for EA Ermor.

Don't forget about falling fires for the mid game. Until the fire resistant troops start showing up, your better off with your communion masters to spam falling fires. It doesnt have as much range, but the area affect is bigger and your communion doesnt take as much fatigue doing it. Also, you can use phoenix power to buff. Because of the range of falling fires you want your master to cast 1 buff spell for your communion before scripting falling fire. for instance. 1 master scripted : communion master/phoenix fire falling fire/falling fire. The next communion master scripts communion master/twist fate/ FF/FF and then add another for etherealness/FF/FF. You want to use the mages that come with 1S 1F as your slaves. One thing to be carefull of is your communion masters killing your slaves by spamming raise dead while the enemy is running away. 1 mid to late game spell you can shoot for is Enchant 6, the one that gives you the fire gem income. It is easy to give one of your lucky F4 mages the 2 fire boosters to cast this spell. You may want N4 on your pretender to make some shrouds for your old mages to keep them from dying.
