Yeah, I've put a load of priests out to inflict some carnage on an attacking horde of undead, and they just sat there casting blessing despite my orders to cast banishment. Still, the fact so many died saved me plenty of upkeep for the idiots.

If Bless is AoE:5+, then why did the Oni miss himself when he fired the bless so close to himself? And why does it say aoe1 in all those locations that he missed in?
EDIT: or do the 5 aoe1's combine together to form an aoe5?

The 5 AoE 1's combine.
Maybe that's the problem. A large AoE spell hits a number of areas around where it is targeted. Which particular areas are determined randomly, so even with precision 100, with only one target, the actual may not be one of the areas randomly chosen.

If I've got that right, an AoE 1 bless should always hit a single sacred target, just like the caster only version would.

Yeah, I saw a nutty one a while back. A Seraph ended up in battle with a whole bunch of demons on it's side. It was actually just passing through and had nothing to do with the battle, I hadn't scripted anything. It throws one of the battlefield holy spells--never mind there wasn't anything sacred out there but itself.

Somehow, the idea of casting a holy spell to try to buff a battlefield full of demons just seemed so wrong.

Your mod's a much more elegant method than strating a battle with bless scripted twice.

It doesn't look so atypical to me. There are 2 random targetting effects at work: one is which center target square the spell hits, and the other is which 5+ areas are affected around to the target. If the spell precision is 100, that should guarantee the first part always hits the target square. The second randomness is what failed you, since you only get a random set of 5+ squares around the target, apparently NOT guaranteed to include the target square. In this case, you targetted "*" as the spell effect center, and the 5 affected squares were "#":Code:

17 _ _ _ _ _
16 _ _ _ _ _
Y 15 _ _ * # _
14 _ # # _ _
13 _ # # _ _
4 5 6 7 8
X

It would seem intuitive to me that such a spell would always affect the "center" target square, but in my experience it's not uncommon that it does not. I have seen castings of bless where the affected squares seem to walk out in a line 3 away from the target, or encircle, or otherwise fail to touch any of the sacreds I placed neatly together there within range. If you can't use the battlefield-wide bless, I recommend the sacreds "hold and attack" and the blessers take 2 rounds of bless to increase the random spatter coverage. If the first bless works completely, the casters will then go off-script, which can be dangerous for holy and other path casters.

It's a bug:
He should have targeted 6/15 instead of 6/14 -he's the only target and the spell has prec 100- and the very first bless effect would have "hit" himself.
I wonder if spells with range>"self" _cannot_ be cast at range 0 ??
