Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)
(I presume Torin is correcting Kadelake's "shall".) Really? I always thought either were okay but had subtly different meanings, the subtlety being one I'm not sure of.

That´s right, shall is for us or I only.
will can be used in any.

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)
Huh? Never heard that. Sorry to go OT in a thread for a game I'm not even in. But what about the meek? You know, "blessed are the cheesemakers, and the meek shall inherit the earth," and all that sort of stuff. (Well, obviously in dominions the meek are just going to inherit the pointy end of a sword, but I couldn't think of a better example.)

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)
Okay, I couldn't resist googling this:
Indicative:
I shall; you will; he, she, or it will. (same for plural).
Imperative:
I will; you shall; he, she, or it shall. (again, same for plural).
So, Torin is correct in the more common indicative sense. However, in the more forceful imperative it's the opposite.
Child: I won't tidy my room.
Mother: You _shall_. (i.e. a command)
This doesn't shed much light on "the meek shall inherit the earth" - apparently it's an order. Or more probably, an error.
Sorry for all the OT discussion on the thread for a game me and vfb aren't even in guys!

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)
No problem
I've always thought that shall implies a greater degree of certainty. So it’s generally not appropriate to us for others except in commands and things like that. Seems I was kind of close to the real usage.
That R’lyeh shall be thrown back in the sea was some kind of divine declaration. Or wishful thinking

Re: Suricate - pbem LA newbie game - (OPEN)
"Shall" is also subjunctive, meaning "let it be so".
The meek shall inherit the earth == All you aggro nations r gonna get pwned.
The madness shall be pushed back into the sea == Dude, we're gonna go pwn some crazy starspawn.
So, Kadelake, you were correct to use "shall." And I promise I'll depart this thread now. If anyone wants to continue discussing "shall", let's head to the Bar & Grill.
