Magisters are also spies IIRC. They can also be built without labs, which can be quite convenient.

I used the judges without magic as my main troop leaders.
If you build enough of them you'll get one with fire and death, which gives you the Flaming Skull fire booster.

I like LA Man's mages. Different from the standard, but all useful and interesting, even when they don't happen to have magic.
