The workaround is unusable for me, because if I leave multiple, windowed instances of the game open so that I can connect, my graphics card overheats and shuts down.

I don't know about Wraithlord's server info program, but the Dominion 3 Server Monitor Tool that I inherited from MarcinM definitely does not disconnect from a server unless you tell it to. So it should be sufficient for the purpose of holding a connection, without any burden to the CPU. It hasn't been updated to accomodate the 3.14 changes yet, but that would be negligible for this task, anyway.

You could also try turning off the animated backgrounds.

That was my first idea, too, but actually you don't have any animated backgrounds when you are connecting to a network server, I think. But I always have them off, anyway...

Yeah, turning them off was one of the first things I did long ago, after first installing ... hey, I'm coming up on one year really soon!
I can't remember where they show up either, but it was the only thing I can think of. On my 'dead' clients I've perma-connected to the server, all I see is a blank black screen.

Wait, I remember, I think you see those lights, some kind of star field, when you don't have animated backgrounds off...

It's really trippy. I have been hypnotized by them several times.
