So Lee Adama goes from a Captain (air force) to a Captain (naval rank) when he assumes command of the Pegasus. Then he's kicked back down to a major. I still don't understand this, but I can live with it. It just doesn't make any sense to me when I've been in the Air Force, and the only thing I know about naval ranks is from Star Trek.

I believe in Starship troopers the leader of the Mobile Infantry got bumped up to Major while on a transport ship because you can't have 2 captains on the same ship. Heinlein was in the navy, perhaps he got it from there.

There's a deleted scene on the DVD that explains how it was handled in the series. By now it's on youtube.
