They show up on the map as crowns- one, two or three depending on what they are worth, and you need 25 to win.

If you're using vista check in:

~\users\<user name>\appData\local\virtualStore\program files\dominions3\savedgames\newlords\

for the pretender file.

I PMed Llama this A.M. and asked him to start at the last possible moment, with or without Bogarus, but i have not heard back , so I don't know. He may have left already.
