If you check the battle order for (34) in the last turn, the first battle happens in the magic phase, so when your troops arrive during the movement phase, you've already lost control of the province, so your army wasn't able to defend your fortress. They therefore attacked my army instead.

The critical hit I mentioned above was in reference to the battle in (43). Big unexpected Ouch!
