One thing that tends to mess with new players. Turning the independents DOWN in a game does not make it easier. It makes it harder. Thats because if you turn the independents UP then you make better decisions about who to attack and when than the AI does. The AI will waste alot of early troops against the first strong independent province it hits. IF you turn the indepts down then you get rushed by all the AIs.
And dont dispair over your impression of certain nations as being worthy or sucky. They are all unique. You need to find the nation which best supports the way that YOU play whether thats barbarian horde tactics, or stealth, or research, or defensive, etc etc. The nation you decide is worthy will be worthy for you. Dont be too surprised if the ones you felt were sucky kick your tail in a multiplayer game because it matches someone elses play style.
