Default Re: Machine Gun Indirect fires?

The other question is.. how many guns firing does it take to effectively interdict an area.

According to the manual, two sections, ie 4 guns. Presumably that's to allow for changing belts and to establish enough rounds in a beaten zone. Sounds a LOT like Mortar fire. Harassing fire vs Neutralization fire as the british would call it. One thing is, that if it's an AFV, having open hatches would be a problem.

And British tank crews thought they had it rough driving through orchards in Normandy....:-D

With the use of Z fire (indirect) with MG34's teams and mounted MG34's on 251's I have had success against Polish and Yugoslav massed infantry attacks (AI). Very useful to fire into and behind smoke screens, while total kills are not achieved it can cause enough suppression to break the back of the attack.

Good point Bob if you had 4 & Z fired them all probably represent beaten zone pretty well

An hour long MG barrage would be quite boring to play. And the ammo consumption would be huge, at an average 200 rpm (which is not close to the maximum RoF) it would be 12000 rounds per gun.

That said, it surely would not be nice to be on the receiving end. While a man lying flat takes pretty small area (probably somewhere around 0.6 square meters or so), with enough rounds fired you tend to run a chance of hitting somebody eventually.

Can't think of it than other being a living hell. under the game you would pretty much need several ammo points of some sort to achieve and hour long sustained fire. Not sure if I'd want to stay still that long before you become the target, especially in PBEM.
