Default AI Plays First

In a player generated battle is there any problem with setting the AI as the first player? The user manual points out this is unsuitable for scenario design but I have not found any specific reference for battles...yet.

Well - the easy way is simply to try the experiment.

AI as P1 is not a problem - AI vs AI games are a standard development test method.
