Default remote attack question

Let's say there is an enemy province where he has just one wizard, 20 PD, and nothing else. If I cast fires from afar on the province, what is the chance that the wizard will be hit?

PD is not counted for the purposes of remote attacks, since they are not units in the normal sense.

Fires from afar hits up to 10? units depending on the number of targets there. I don't know the precise mechanics, I think the book or in-game description explains a bit. Something like if there are above a certain number of units (60? You'll have to check), all will hit. However, the fewer there are below that number, the fewer will hit.

Think of it as a bit like randomly throwing 10 stones into a courtyard. If the courtyard is packed with people, you'll almost certainly hit 10 times; if it's half-full you'll hit about 5 times. If there's only one person somewhere in there, you'd need a lot of luck to hit him even once.

At any rate, it's a very ineffective way to kill lone or small groups of commanders. If there are a lot of units/commanders, it depends on the army's composition - the lower the unit : commander ratio the better. 30 mages and 30 units makes it a lovely spell to cast. 2 mages and 58 units, I wouldn't bother as you'll probably not hit the mages anyway.

Agema more or less nailed it. There's a small percentage chance to hit an enemy unit with the spell. Given enough targets, you'll hit one, but most likely won't kill it. Against a single unit, remote assassination spells are far more likely to work though.
