In that period they can contain stugs being used in the tank role, since that happened. (Your post seems to imply that they are the only option).

Mobhack->database check utilities->Unit checks button->find units tab, select class 13 for OOB 16 and check the result list.

I bolded the stug entries - they are all X3 radio codes, so the human player has the option to field the panzer units with stugs issued as ersatz tanks, but the AI will not field hordes of the things. It only buys stugs in proper stug formations.

Yes, and they have been in the game like that for well over 8 years now. The Germans frequently added Stug's to panzer formations in the later half of the war when there weren't enough turreted tanks to replace losses

Did wonder if I had just been blind before knew they were in TD formations as well as own, bit of brainfade on my behalf.
