Attacking one neighbour should only be done when you have the others secured, be it by force or diplomacy.

This is pretty much true, my main concern was if Marverni managed to completly conquer Tir na Nog, I would have been hemmed in by two nations which had significant size advantages over my empire. Leaving Marverni to conquer TNN would have been suicide from my point of view, intervention was a no brainer.
