Default Flickering fonts with Ati Catalyst 9.8/9.11

Since I had to update the drivers for my Ati/Powercolor HD3650AGP to Catalyst 9.8 (and now 9.11) drivers, I can't play SE5 in fullscreen mode any more, since all the white font is flickering at (roughly) 1/2 fps ?!

No matter what I did to graphics driver settings, or SE5 settings (other than switching to windowed mode), the flickering remains, making the game unplayable.

Any ideas?

(Oh, no, I'm not using Vista, but WinXPProfSP3. I wonder, though, if the "Vista is slow because of the white font writing into DX surface" issue is actually related ?!)

Same problem for me too. But in my case the flickering effet is diffused an all screen.

For now my only solution is to play in windowed mode; I have an ASUS EAH4670 with aty catalyst in version 9.2

I've had the same problem and I have upgraded my video card from a 2800 to a 4800 ati card and what i've done is made my desktop 1152x864 and i can play it no problems

as for the flicking it's in the ati video settings keep your Anti-Aliasing at 8x any higher will cause the fonts and the screen to flicker (i've done it with trial and error) i have all my other settings high and i can run the game with no probs

hope this helps other people who have had same problems

Didn't help in my case - even had AA completely off!
(And it was only the white font that was flickering, not the whole screen, btw.)

I'm running the game windowed now, with tweaked ini to get something like 1260x1006 resolution. A little bit of try-an'-error with the driver setting gave me at least a managable speed / mouse pointer lag in windowed mode, so I'm barely able to play :/

Btw., Aaron told me to pester Strategy First for an update (might be is a DirectX-problem with driver tailored for newer hardware and Vista/W7).
Yet, it's impossible to issue a support incidient with them, as their web form does not work, and the web admin didn't react to email for over a month now.

ya how DARE they update drivers and things that make the older games have probs

and then we want a patch for the game and the older games are no longer supported anymore
