Right now, the only way to create your own maps is to modify the existing map files. There is no way to expand map size. That's something we are considering as a future addition. If you get bored of the historical maps and random maps (if it's possible to get bored of those), the Custom Mode does have a bunch of additional custom maps to choose from.
