The LVTE's were kept around to supplement/substitute for the CEV (since they didn't have many and they were too slow with the introduction of the M1A1).

Like EVERYTHING in the USMC the plows weren't scrapped, just placed in storage.

I'll have a look at it. If things still look useful I'll leave them in. The ABV isn't amphibious

Methinks most "modern" marines who trained on the M16 would get a real wake up after a day at the range with an M14.

With the plow attachment the LVT isn't amphibious either. Makes them a "bit" bow heavy.

Agreed, I (any may others) MUCH prefer the M14.
So it weighs a bit more, and is a little longer...you can reach out and touch someone at 600m and unlike the 5.56 with a 7.62 you know they're not getting back up.

I fired one once (around 1975) had a devil of a time hitting a man-size target at 50m.

I fired one once (around 1975) had a devil of a time hitting a man-size target at 50m.

Sten gone by the 50's, replaced with Sterling, the "SMG" or Small Metal Gun. Improvement on Sten - magazine was double column so less stoppages.

I only used once on the ranges, about 50m, was not greatly impressed. It did have a bayonet lug, and being all metal, one could thump the enemy with it I suppose after sticking him. It was however more useful than the browning 9mm pistol. But I think pistols are really only issued as a weight to keep maps from flying away - a rock of equivalent mass would cause less ND problems etc than issuing pistols and would damage the enemy as much (or more) .

Was only issued (in the infantry in the 70s) to drivers, WOMBAT RCL crews, signallers etc for personal protection. Stock folded up, was easy to carry slung so without magazine. Not seen in the rifle platoon as a standard weapon - radioman might scrounge one, but most preferred to keep hold of the issue SLR.

Officers carried SLR, a few pistols we had remained in the armoury permanently (There were no qualifications for any of the company personnel on it). SMG did go on exercise and had no blank adaptor, so were a good skive to carry - since they would not get full of crud and need a decoke.

SA80 series seems to have replaced the use of SMG, but then they made the shortie carbine version of that as well so reduced length weapon must have its needs. Seems to be issued to dog handlers, vehicle crewman etc - again more for personal defence ?.

I'm a bigger guy so the extra weight didn't bother me I preferred the M-14 over the M-16 as well. There's a reason some spec op/snipers still use them today. Darn sad day as well when they replaced our 1911 Colt .45's with the 9mm as well. Sorry for getting off topic here.

Hmmm.. so you cannot land them at the beach with the plows on and therefore cannot use them on the beach ( in retrospect I can see your point that they wouldn't swim well with that on . I will make the adjustments in the OOB)

So would the plows be transported to the beachhead separately then installed later?

About half way down it talks about the need to use local indigenous plows or bulldozers to keep the beaches clear and at the time the need of landing with D-5 CATs for beach clearing ops in the second or third wave of a beach assault as an option. It does discuss warm weather ops and note this is from 1984. So I would agree later they must have decided to bring them in during later waves and field attached them. Best that I can do on the quick! Hope it helps?

Yup.

Pretty much the same with the plow on the Abrams too.
I'm not sure if an M1A1 with the plow attached will fit on an LCAC, it may be too long for the cargo bay.

Since the subject sorta-kinda seems to be "assault beach landings"...
For an assault landing the USMC generally relies on man-portable obstacle breaching devices.
Since WinSPMBT doesn't deal with line-charges, bangalores, etc. just add some extra infantry engineers for a beach assault scenario to represent the breaching devices that would be issued to the regular infantry units in such a situation.

Should the need arise there are plans (on paper anyway) to land armored bulldozers via LSTs. As I understand it the armor came from the old WWII CA's that were broken up. With like 8 inches of armor the dozers would only move like 3mph *LOL*
