It was nothing more fancy that selecting the colour next to the eclipses, and then filling them in. Although my first attempt to clean the map lead to disaster when I accidently drew over the white pixels that mark a province. That resulted in some really wild province connections and crashes
The original GIMP file would be handy if you still have it, since I personally really like this map.
